At ESCS we place a high premium on Mathematics competitions. Over the last few months our high school students (Gr 8-12) have excelled in two major Mathematics competitions.
The first competition was the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO). The SAMO is the premier Mathematics competition in SA with over 100 000 entries country wide. This year we had 107 ESCS entrants from the High school. Of those who wrote the first round, 65 qualified for the second round (61% of our entrants). This is exceptional considering, country-wide, only between 10-14% (depending on the year) of entrants qualify to write the second round. The results of the second round were issued yesterday and we are very excited to hear that two of our students, namely Franco Hill Gr 12 and Arseama Gebremichael Gr 9 have qualified in the top 100 to write the third round.
The second competition was the University of Cape Town (UCT) Mathematics Competition. This is a more local competition for all the schools, approximately 7000 students, with 160 schools participating in the W Cape area. This year, despite the competition being particularly tough, our students performed extremely well. ESCS was placed 14th in the overall ranking amongst all the high schools (state and independent). This is the eighth consecutive year we have been ranked among the top 20 schools. In addition, over half our students (55%) obtained a merit award indicating that they came in the top 20% of entrants in their respective age group. We are beyond thrilled with this result.
Well done to all our ESCS Mathematicians, we are very proud of you all!
